HOPING FOR A PEACEFUL MMXXIV

T he two-faced Roman god Janus is once again peeking at us through his mysterious doorway, one visage looking to the past, the other gazing to the future. Janus, for whom January is named, was the god of time and transitions, as well as the god of beginnings and endings—especially of war. When his door was open, war was raging somewhere in the Roman Empire. When it was closed, the empire was at peace.

Today, it seems, his door is always open, the American Empire sending a constant stream of troops and weapons to far-flung spots across the globe. Several years ago I was foolish enough to write an editorial wondering out loud whether human beings were advanced enough to reject war as a solution to international problems. I wasn’t optimistic, but I always like to enter a new year with some bit of hope. I am allowed to hope, right? Looking around the world today, I think I’m conning myself. Humans may never evolve enough to throw aside the very instincts that put us atop the food-chain in the first place.

But, if I am allowed to hope for 2024, then I hope for at least two wars to end. The first is the one ravaging in Palestine. Israel seems determined to cleanse the western Holy Land of all Palestinian Muslims and Christians. As I write this, 20,000 inhabitants (and counting) of far-western Palestine have been killed, the vast majority of the dead being women, children, the elderly and infirm. The Gaza Strip (Gaza), where this is mostly occurring, is that 139-square-mile sliver of land that originally made its claim to fame as an enormous refugee camp for victims fleeing the Nakba. Those who remain in Gaza today do so because they have nowhere to go or they are fighting invaders. But the civilians are sitting ducks. Tens of thousands more will die if a major power does not step in.

I am hoping early in 2024 the United States becomes that power, and works to end this genocide, not abet it. The other war I would like to see end is still being fought in Ukraine. As many as 1 million Ukrainians have been displaced, 500,000 Ukrainians may have died (soldiers and civilians) and several hundred thousand Russian soldiers are thought to have perished. This war is another godawful affair, with ethnic and cultural brothers killing one another with the most sophisticated weapons man has even devised.

Let’s be honest. The U.S. government does not give a rat’s derrière about how many Ukrainians die. All our war-fogged leaders want is to “weaken Russia.” It has failed. Russia is stronger than ever, despite the worst economic sanctions ever imposed on a nation. It is now time for the United States to help end the wars in Ukraine and Palestine—not prolong them—through commonsense diplomacy, not precision missiles and AI-guided assassin drones. We know that is a lot to ask of our leaders, but it is, after all, our tax dollars they are using to pay for every dead Palestinian, Ukrainian or Russian. It’s time the American people speak up and demand no tax dollars go to fund these wars. That’s probably foolish—but you said I could hope. In this issue of TBR, we present you three inspirational stories of Irish history beginning with our lead story on Patrick Pearse, a prominent leader in the Irish freedom movement. The struggles of the Irish remind us of the current plight of the Palestinians (see John Friend’s editorial on page 3), so we also offer a series of thought-provoking, uncensored articles on the events in the Middle East that will get you thinking. That series begins on page 26. —PAUL ANGEL, Executive Editor

A CONCISE HISTORICAL TIMELINE OF THE CREATION OF ISRAEL
