About the author: Erich Hartmann (1922–1993), joined the Luftwaffe in 1940 and was assigned to Jagdgeschwader 52 on the Eastern Front, where he achieved his record-breaking number of aerial victories. Hartmann was captured by Soviet forces and spent over ten years in prison camps, enduring harsh conditions and forced labor. Upon his release in 1955, he returned to West Germany and joined the newly formed Bundeswehr, becoming the first commander of Jagdgeschwader 71 “Richthofen.”
